IT Leadership - Creating Strategic Advantage Through IT

The IT ecosystem is in disarray right now due to the ever increasing pressure to deploy AI and simultaneously keep systems safe and costs down. IT has always been at the center of these value conversations - cost vs. benefit, technology solutions vs. process. AI is only underscoring all of these challenges.

So, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Strategic IT leaders today need to have strong leadership skills, exceptional collaboration skills, and the unique ability to hold firm when decisions may put the organization at risk. This is nothing new, this is part of an IT leader's role - but AI is making the boundaries blurry. AI is not just another software module to light up. It's not the panacea for all ills. It holds great promise, but it also introduces new risk we are just starting to understand.

My last book, Renovating Healthcare IT, talked about revamping what you already have in place through a methodical process of analyzing current state and desired future state. The same processes I describe in my book hold true for AI. The fundamental questions haven't really changed.

This is not an easy time for any organization, especially healthcare organizations. Navigating this uncertainty successfully will require strong collaboration, communication and curiosity. We must be curious and we must also temper that curiosity with rigorous analysis, investigation, and process.

Time will tell how this all shakes out. For now, the fundamentals of business and leadership not only haven't changed, theyve become more important than ever.
